Homemade Toothpaste
Basically it had gotten to the point that my stomach just couldn't handle it anymore even if it was a milder flavour. Thankfully I was able to find one brand that worked great for several years until it was discontinued.
I soon grew to realize just how prevalent that one flavour was especially when you can't have it. Eventually I was able to find a local pharmacist that made his own clay toothpaste. It was something I had never tried before, but it worked really well. No upset stomach and of course it didn't contain any sugar, dyes, or preservatives. A win win until that business closed.
Thankfully they were kind enough to give me some advise to help me make my own based on the ingredients of their toothpaste. That was a huge relief to me because I couldn't find anything.
It did take a couple of tries to get the right balance and the taste just right but I was able to do it and I've been using this recipe now for a couple of years. The ingredients that I use are not too hard to find. I can pick them up at my local health store, Amazon and even the bulk store and each batch lasts roughly 3 months. The cost also turned out to be less than had originally expected.
Here is a quick overview of some of the benefits of the ingredients that are in this recipe.
Bentonite clay: This clay is not only used in skin care but in oral care as well. It cleans, removes plaque and prevents bad breath. The theory is that the clays negatively charged molecules (that expand when wet) attract and remove positively charged molecules like heavy metals.* The minerals contained in the clay help clean all the bacteria and remineralize the tooth enamel.
Xylitol; This ingredients helps prevent cavities, reduces plaque buildup, tooth decay and inflammatory gum disease.**
Pink Salt: There are actually 84 trace minerals in this salt that help maintain both teeth and gums as well as acting as a disinfectant.
Coconut Oil: Reduces plaque and harmful bacteria in the mouth. It also helps prevent gum disease and tooth decay.
My Recipe for homemade clay toothpaste.
1/4 cup Bentonite clay
1tsp Xylitol
1 1/2 tsp Pink Salt
1/2 tsp Cinnamon
1/2 tsp Vanilla (sugar free)
2, 1/8 tsp Coconut Oil
Hot Water
Firstly do not use any metal when putting this together as it can react with the ingredients. Plastic, glass and ceramic are all great to use.
Mix dry ingredients together and then add the vanilla and coconut oil.
Mix well then slowly add hot water alternating mixing and adding water.
Keep doing this until you get your desired consistency and then empty this into a sterile glass container with lid. This recipe usually lasts me about 3 months or so.
