Spring Time Allergies

It's Spring! The weather is warming, the trees and flowers are blooming.  Everything seems to be coming to life in the most beautiful way possible. I love the warmer weather, the longer days and just getting outside. Unfortunately if you have grass and other pollen allergies you also might be suffering a bit right now.

While all I want to do is be outside so does everyone else and for some reason when they decide to mow their lawns they never all mow on the same day.  Yes, well a girl can dream.

So while we try to enjoy the change in season our poor immune systems are feeling like they are being attacked.  As a result histamine is then released, and yes here begins the sneezing, the runny nose, the itchy eyes and everything else that comes with allergic symptoms.

The most common culprits this time of year are the trees, weeds and grasses that I've listed below.

Trees:

  •  Willow
  • Cottonwood, Cedar, Cypress
  • Poplar, Palm, Pine
  • Alder, Ash, Aspen
  • Beech, Box elder
  • Elm
  • Maple, Mulberry
  • Hickory
  • Sycamore
  • Olive, Oak

Weeds And Grasses:

  •  Bermuda
  • Sweet vernal, Saltgrass
  • Johnson, June
  • Timothy
  • Fescue
  • Orchard
  • Perennial rye
  • Redtop
If you can find pollen counts for your area it can be a big help in knowing when the best or worst time to go out might be.  If you've had your windows (especially your bedroom windows) open you might consider washing your bedding more often to remove excess pollen. You may also need to clean and vacuum more frequently as well.  If you've been outside all day and come in, leave your shoes at the door. Then go change into clean cloths and throw those pollen covered cloths in the wash. More frequent showers can also help to remove excess pollen from skin and hair even if it's just a quick rinse.  And, did you know that your sunglasses can also help reduce the amount of pollen that can get into your eyes.
