Holiday Decorating For Allergies
Sometimes navigating the Christmas season can be a bit of a challenge when you have allergies.
How many of us have to hold our breath while entering the grocery store because of all the freshly cut greenery and poinsettia plants out front?
Then there's all those scented candles that can also really amp up the allergies especially at this time of year.
So if you like the look and the Holiday smells but your allergies don't, I have a few suggestions to help you enjoy the moments.
Instead of scented candles opt for unscented beeswax candles if you absolutely must have the real thing. Pure beeswax candles are the cleanest burning candle and they produce less soot while releasing negative ions that help remove toxins from the air.
Personally I love using mini lights and unscented battery operated candles to get the look and feel that I want. It's something you can use year after year and if you have pets or kids there are no worries about any accidents or fires.
Artificial Christmas tree's can actually be a great investment that can last year after year instead of buying a new tree each year. An artificial tree can last 10 years or more (at least the ones I have had certainly have) so just think of how much you could save each year not having to purchase a tree. Just remember to store your tree in a dry place in a box or bag to keep it as dust free as possible. I've also always left the lights on the tree when I pack it away, it saves a whole lot of time when you bring it out again the following year.
Although there are many people who love the real thing some people can be allergic to the tree itself, or the mold that comes along with that tree. There's also considerably more clean up and if you have ever had a pet knock over your tree it's way more of a mess to clean up than that of an artificial tree. Just think, you could still be picking up pine needles well after the tree has gone....
If you love all the Christmas scents there is a way to enjoy them without using candles or any other scented products. Here are a two of my favourite stove top holiday scents.
Orange Cranberry
1 orange, sliced (or 1/2 an orange cut into slices will work too)
1/2 cup cranberries
2-4 cinnamon sticks (broken in half)
1 Tbsp Cloves
Pinch or 2 of Nutmeg
3 cups water
In a small sauce pan combine all ingredients together and let simmer for as long as desired.
Cinnamon Apple
1 apple, sliced
2 cinnamon sticks (broken in half)
1/2 tsp Cloves
3 cups water
In a small pan combine ingredients and let simmer.
Just remember to make sure not to let it go dry. You can add more water at anytime to prolong the scent.
Note: You can also use a mini crock pot if you happen to have one.
