Some Creative Hidden Storage

So the Spring cleaning organizing bug has hit me once again.  I don't know what it is (maybe it's the longer days and sunshine) but I feel the absolute need to improve and reorganize things this time of year.

I've wanted to create some kind of additional hidden storage at the head of my bed for some time.  Possibly with a shelf that came under or up to the top of the headboard. The challenge being that I only had at most 10 inches from the wall to the headboard to work with and it couldn't be any longer than the width of the bed.

I went through some of the things I already had and decided I could probably use a white Ikea Trone Cabinet, which measures about 7-8 inches deep. But I would still need to get a few things to make this work.  With a maximum of just 10 inches it really limited my options but I eventually came across an attachment piece for a desk at Ikea, PÃ…HL Add-On Unit $30 (at about 6 1/2 - 7 inches deep). I also found a four pack of adjustable legs for $5 and I had 2 pieces of flat drawer fronts that were about 6 inches.  Placed end to end these drawer fronts total length came to just a few inches shorter than the width of the bed. So in theory I thought this could actually work.

So, once the pieces I ordered arrived I got right to work. I began by putting together the Pahl Add-On Unit and setting it aside. I attached the two narrow drawer fronts end to end using some left over wood on the bottom to form the base. I then attached the adjustable legs to the bottom with felt pads for easy sliding on the wood floors. I used command strips at the base of the Add-On Unit and placed it on top of the door front base so that it lined up to the end of the door front. I placed the Trone Cabinet beside it, again attaching it with command strips on the bottom. The weight of these both helped to keep things secure. I also added some felt strips at the top points of the Trone and the Add-On unit so that it wouldn't mark the walls. The only issue I came across was that the drawer fronts were slightly narrower than expected which affected the stability. Thankfully I was able to compensate by using the height adjustments on the feet and placing them in a way to better stabilize it.  It definitely would have worked better with an extra inch or two to work with, but so far it seems to be working pretty well.
It easily slides out.

Felt strips protect the wall from any damage.

This pull out storage is only visible if you're looking over the headboard or directly from the side.
The Trone Cabinet and the Pahl Add-On can both be reused somewhere else if needed since I was careful to only use adhesive strips that wont damage the surface. The door fronts only have screws on the underside so they can also be reused along with the adjustable feet.

I really do my best to make something that can be used in more than just one way, because it's always nice to give yourself options while reducing your costs.
It's hardly visible behind the headboard.
