Our Simple DIY Indoor Pen For Puppy

Just a short few months ago some family members adopted a puppy. And yes as incredibly cute as she is, she is one energetic chewing machine. Not only was there some creative furniture protection needed, but so was a safe place were she could go and not cause any damage. So some kind of fenced off area was needed inside the house. But after looking at some of the prices online I suggested that maybe we would come up with something. I just didn't know exactly what?

A little cardboard and duck tape for furniture protection

I already had some old cube wire storage shelving I wasn't currently using and thought that we could maybe use them? So I searched some local stores online and found one that had similar shelving in stock (around $20).  So with the old one I already had, and the new one I was able to come up with a simple puppy pen.

The shelves come with round connectors that you push each square corner piece into. So it does take a bit of work to get all the parts securely in place. I also used the same connectors on the bottom to both protect the floor and add some additional stability.  I was able to shape it for the space that was available and to the height that was needed.  Most sections were two squares high with the exception of the one side which was against the wall and the one square we used as a kind of door.  The only tricky part was finding something that would act like hinges to create that small door when it was needed.

After scrounging around the house for some possible solutions I found a few extra meatal shower curtain hooks. I used three hooks on one side to act like hinges and another one that could be used to temporarily secure it closed.  Although it's a loose fit it works more than well enough whenever it's needed.

All in all, the whole project cost just over $20.00. In comparison I could only find something similar and about the same size online form around $60.00 to $160.00. Quiet a considerable savings. Since it's most likely only going to be used for the short term this option just made so much more sense. Of course once your done using it you can take it apart and repurpose it for something else. Or, since it doesn't take up a lot of space to store once it's disassembled it doesn't take up a lot of valuable storage space.
