Pollution And Home Heating Continued
The one thing to note about indoor air pollution is that natural gas appliances do produce pollutants. If you have asthma, chemical sensitivities or even allergies they can make things much worse.
They produce irritants such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, VOC's such as formaldehyde and particulate matter. There is also ingredients that are present in the gas itself, like hydrocarbons, radon, and heavy metals.
Gas stoves of course are the most concerning and depending on the age of the stove the emissions produced will vary. Exposure can compromise the immune system, trigger or increase the probability of asthma attacks and cause shortness of breath.
If your looking to reduce the air pollution in your home her are a few simple things you can do.
1. Before turning on the electric baseboard heaters vacuum them, to remove all the dust and other things that accumulate in them when they're not in use.
2. Change the filters on your furnace regularly.
3. Avoid the use of wood fireplaces.
4. Reduce the number of carpets in your home.
5. Vacuum, dust and clean regularly.
6. Avoid the use of chemicals in the home including cleaners, deodorizers, and scented products.
7. Consider an air purifier.
8. If the pollution levels are high outside leave the widows and doors closed and turn on your air purifiers.
9. Control the humidity in your home to avoid the risk of mold.
