Some Tasty Treats

Since some of us will have just celebrated Halloween I thought it might be a great time to remind you that not all edible treats have to be bad for us. For those of us with food allergies a lot of these treats are not something we can actually have. As a result some kids (and yes even adults) might feel left out, and it doesn't have to be that way.  Sometimes the healthier creative ideas can actually be fun and even super yummy.  Here are just a couple of simple yet tasty ideas to inspire you.

Frozen Yogurt berries

Dip your favourite berries (think blueberries or raspberries) in yogurt (just note that the low fat yogurts don't freeze as well).  Place them on a cookie sheet and then into the freezer. When they are good and frozen you can remove them and place them in a sealable bag or container to snack on whenever you like.

Dried fruit dipped in chocolate

Melt some of your favourite chocolate. (I use sugar free organic dark chocolate with a little brown rice syrup added.) Then take some dried fruit (I like natural sulfite free apricots.) and dip half the dried fruit in chocolate. Place them on a cookie sheet and then in the fridge or freezer until set. When they are nice and cold you can remove them and place them in a sealed container in the fridge. I find that because the dried fruit is naturally sweet it doesn't need a whole lot of added sweetness.

I also wanted to take a moment to remind everyone of the Teal Pumpkin Project?  In Canada this project is supported by Food Allergy Canada.  Its purpose is to raise awareness about food allergies around and during Halloween while promoting inclusion for all our trick-or-treaters.
