What's In My Toothpaste ?

As you've probably noticed (if you've ever bought toothpaste) is that the majority of them are flavoured with some kind of mint, spearmint or peppermint.  Not great news if you don't like it or if you're sensitive or allergic.  Then of course there are all the artificial colours, flavours and sweeteners.  Also not so great if you are sensitive or allergic.
Unfortunately that's not all you will find in your average toothpaste, you will also find:

Triclosan  -  Is a antibacterial chemical that is a endocrine-disrupting chemical that promotes several cancers, thyroid dysfunction and is a concern for antibiotic resistance.

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) - Is the foaming agent that has been linked to canker sores, skin irritation and interference with taste buds (possibly the reason why things don't taste so good after you've just brushed your                                                        teeth.)

Parabens - A endocrine disruptor that mimics estrogen.  (aka: methylparaben, Ethylparaben,              Isobutylparaben,  Propylparaben,  Butylparaben, Isopropylparaben)

Propylene glycol - Is a type of mineral oil that has been linked to organ system toxicity, lung, eye and skin irritation.

Carrageenan - Is a thickening agent.  The food grade carrageenan is linked to inflammation, Insulin resistance, and is suspected of carcinogenic activity.

Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives - Are added to kill microbes that can grow in a product. These preservatives have been linked to allergic reactions and cancer.
(aka: DMDM hydantoin, Diazolidinyl urea, Imidazolidinyl urea, POlyoxymethylene urea, Methenamine, Quaternuim-15, Sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1, 3-diol (Bromopol),5-bromo-5-nitro-1, 3 dioxane (Bronidox), Glyoxal)

Micro-beads - Can become trapped under gums and between teeth promoting bacteria.  The micro-beads also tend to get past water treatment and into the water.  These beads absorb toxins and then are consumed by wildlife and eventually by us.

Diethanolamine (DEA) - Is a foaming agent and a hormone disrupter.

GMOs - To make sure the product does not contain GMOs it must specify this on the label.

Artificial colour and flavour  - These ingredients are linked to allergic reaction, behavioral problems in children and several cancers.

Aspertame - A artificial sweetener linked to weight gain, cancer, brain tumor and birth defects.

Fluoride - In recent years we have learned that Fluoride is actually toxic and has very little effect on the fluorapatite layer .  Over time toxicity levels build in the body leading to many health conditions.

There are quite a few options available (although if you are like me and still searching for mint free it's still proving to be difficult).  The Green Beaver Company, Wela, Jason, Nature's Gate, and Tom's are a few of the more common brands found in my area.
