When You Get A Little To Much Sun

The warm weather has made an appearance and you're finally able to spend the day enjoying every second.  After all it's been way too long and you deserve a little you time.  But after spending the day in the great outdoors, it dawns on you, a little late that you completely forgot the sunscreen.  So instead of basking in the warmth of a great day you're feeling the heat of your sunburned skin.

So what can you do to ease any future discomfort?  Well quite a bit actually.
Here are a few tried and true options that you might like to try, actually you probably already have a few of these ingredients in your kitchen.
  • Keep hydrated and take an over the counter pain reliever if needed.
  • Cool water, Witch hazel, or Green tea compresses.
  • Cool shower or bath.  You can try Oatmeal, White vinegar or Apple cider vinegar baths, just add about 1 cup to your bath.  You can also try adding a couple of Green tea bags to your bath.
  • Applying plain yogurt to skin and rinsing it off in the shower can bring relief too.  Just remember to be gentle and pat your skin dry, don't rub.
  • Then moisturize the heck out of your skin to minimize dryness, itching and peeling.  It takes your skin a long time to actually recover from a sunburn, so be extra kind to it.
Although Aloe Vera and Calendula are very well known for their moisturizing and healing effects, any moisturizer made for sensitive skin can help.  Just remember to stay away from potential irritating ingredients like alcohol, fragrance, and dyes. I've recently seen several recommendations to avoid using petroleum jelly on sunburns as well, as it can make the burn worse.
If your skin peels that new skin can burn faster than it did before.  So cover up with clothing or a hat and remember your sunscreen, don't make the same mistake twice.

By the way there are some other ways to help boost your skins natural protection from the sun that you may not have thought of.
Yes eating you fruits and veggies especially those high in carotenoids (those highly pigmented fruits and veggies), beta carotine (think carrots and sweet potatoes), and lycopene (tomatoes and water melon).
According to Alive Magazine's article "Natural Sun Protection, From The Inside out' by Serenity Aberdour,ND these healthy food help to protect us from harmful UV light and reduce our sensitivity to it.
Antioxidants (yes this does include dark chocolate and red wine) Omega 3's (fish), Topical and ingested Vitamin C (strawberries, kiwi,) and Vitamin E (nuts & seeds), and of course Green tea both ingested and topical, can also help to protect your body from harmful sun rays.

So no more excuses, protect your skin you have it for life.
