Sulphite Allergies and Sensitivities
Sulphites are used as food additives. But did you know they can also be found naturally in some foods and some sources of water ?
Hydrogen sulfide and sulfate are the types of Sulphites that can be found naturally in some water sources.
If you're wondering if your local water source contains sulphites and how much, contact you local town or city water department. Most now have water testing report information available online that will give you very detailed information.
Other names for Sulphites include:
Potassium bisulphite, Potassium metabisulphite, Sodium bisulphite,
Sodium dithionite, Sodium metabisulphite, Disodium sulphite,
Sulfite, Sulfur dioxide, Sulphiting agents,
Sulphurous acid.
You can find sulphites in the following foods:
- beer, cider, wine
- bottled lime/lemon juice concentrates
- condiments, dressings, jams, fruit fillings & syrup, sugar syrups, pectin, molasses, gravies, sauces, guacamole
- soup and soup mix
- dried spices, herbs, tea
- dried veggies and fruit
- grapes
- tomato paste and puree
- frozen fruits and veggies
- canned fruits and veggies
- fruit and veggie juices
- glazed fruits
- cornmeal, cornstarch, starches
- cereal, crackers, muesli
- deli meats, hot dogs, sausage, fish
- processed potatoes
- sauerkraut
- maraschino cherries
- soy products
- some cheeses
- snack foods, soft drinks, cookies
- cider vinegar
Sulphites can also be found in some medications such as Bronchodilator solutions for asthma, topical eye drops, and a significant list of injectable form of medications such as Epinephrine, Hydrocortisone, Demerol, and Novocaine.
