It's Allergy Season...Again (Part 3)

Continuing on with the theme of allergy relief and some more options that you might want to consider.
Allergy shots (aka immunotherapy):  I actually went through this as a teenager and after many months discovered that sadly it just didn't work for me.  But if the medications you're taking for your allergies aren't working or they are not well tolerated this may be an option for you.
The objective of these treatments is to help your body build up a tolerance over time.  This can be a long process but it can be very helpful for some people especially if you suffer from allergies for more than just a couple months out of the year.
Another form of immunotherapy is called Sublingual Immunotherapy.  It's a process called allergy desensitization and by exposing yourself to a small dose under the tongue your immune system is less reactive allowing your body to build up a tolerance.  Basically it's the same as allergy shots but it's just administered differently.

A few Supplements that can help your Allergies.

1.Vitamin C helps to enhance your immune system and helps to actually prevent histamine formation. It's a water soluble vitamin so it's safe for higher doses although it can have a laxative like effect at high doses for some people.
It's best to take Vitamin C in smaller doses throughout the day for best absorption. Depending on your tolerance level 2000-6000 mg per day maximum is quite safe.
2. Probiotics help boost your bodies immunity and help reduce allergy severity.
3. A good Multivitamin helps support your immune system.
4. Healthy Fish Oils (DHA/EPA) are natural ant-inflammatories.
5. Quercetin is a type of flavonoid antioxidant that has anti-viral compounds and is a histamine inhibitor that's best taken with Vitamin C. It's found in supplement form and naturally in green tea, berries, red wine and many other fruits and vegetables.
6. Plant sterols help to regulate the immune system and reduce levels of cortisol "stress hormone". You can find them as a supplement and in foods like grains, nuts, vegetables and fruits.

There are several Natural remedies that maybe helpful as well, such as nettle, butterbur, Albizia lebbeck just to name a few. The health stores offers many other allergy remedies. So depending on your type of allergy, what you are able to take in regards to ingredients, it can greatly differ from person to person.
Some people also find that Acupuncture and Chiropractic treatments can be very helpful as well.

Diet can have a significant affect on how you feel. Eating plenty of fruits and veggies will increase anti-oxidant levels in your body which in turn will help your immune system. Also doing your best to reduce or eliminate foods that cause inflammation such as sugar, high fat foods, trans fats, and processed foods. You might be pleasantly surprised how much better you feel by just eating well.

Some other helpful tips you can use:
- Close the windows on high pollen/allergy days and turn on your air purifier.
- If you've been outside jump in the shower to get rid of any allergens on your skin and change your clothes.
- Sometimes you just have to wear a mask to avoid breathing in allergens.
- Drink plenty of water and keep hydrated.
- Keep your house clean (and get rid of those dust bunnies) but avoid the use of harsh chemicals.

As always talk to your Doctor and Pharmacist for information.  Your Pharmacist can also help inform you of any interactions with medications and supplements etc... .  I know that some of my local Health Stores have some super helpful and knowledgeable people working there.  They can help you wade through all those products and options to find something that will actually work for you.
